  1. what I find interesting about his speech is where he drew inspiration and where that ultimately led him to go when presenting. Inspiration from the famous “I have a dream” speech came from his desire for his children to grow up in a world with racial justice and the ability to live without separate expectations based on skin color. His iconic line and title of the speech was interestingly enough not in his original draft in writing. Spectators believe due to the positive reactions he received, the audience caused him to go off text because he felt compelled to share the truths of his heart and what he really wanted for America.

    1. Excellent response Sheply, Dr. King was a revolutionary, however not everyone had his vision of the beloved community; therefore,it is through the teaching of his theology whereby we inspire future generations to evolve beyond the evil seed of race and racism for the love God and the brotherhood of humankind.

  2. 2 thoughts that I have about Martin Luthers famous “I have a dream” speech, originally having a different title would be that he was very brave and bold with his statement. Martin Luther was a voice for everyone who felt like they did not have a say. Just by looking and seeing the faces in audience, he knew what he had to do and what he had to say. He had a dream and he knew others did too, to not be judged but what is on the outside, but rather on the inside. I love how they said it was a rededication, it is important to always keep in mind that there is still struggles today.

  3. Very inspirational seeing how he drew inspiration for the speech and really shows how far the nation has come since MLK delivered this speech and advocated for Civil Rights.

    1. I found it interesting that his speech was originally titled a different name. This was such a powerful speech. How he drew inspiration and went on present the speech is a testament to Martin Luther King Jr’s bravery. He was a voice for those who did not have a say. It also shows how far we have come as a nation in terms of civil rights and the civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King Jr. wanted his children to grow up in a society where they weren’t judged for the color of their skin, and this became what prompted his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. I find it interesting that the original title aimed to make a statement that reflected that people needed to divert from the normal views regarding race, and the speech actually did not have the famous section about his “dream.” Martin Luther King III addresses his father’s speech years later as a rededication in which people are reminded how far society still has to go with racial equality.

  5. The importance of this speech not only because of what was said but, when it was said makes this one of the most crucial speeches in history in my opinion. The way he talks and involves himself so deeply in the movement makes it hard to not listen to every word. The fact that some of this speech was made up in the moment as he spoke from his heart makes it all the more moving.

  6. The original name and speech was intended to target the way things were and how badly they needed to change. The speech in a whole still was about the way things needed to change but as soon as Dr. King improvised a bit because he knew he needed to say what he was feeling to get his thoughts and feelings across. He improvised and said the famous, “I Have a Dream” line and that changed history forever.

  7. It’s interesting to me that what is now considered to be King’s best speech by far, was also one of the most improvised. To me, this shows that it is more important to be charismatic and speak from the heart, and it probably came across as more genuine and moving since it was less scripted. This also shows that delivery is as if not more important that content. – Kahil Shankar

  8. This speech significantly impacted history and helped to create a major change in our country. His reasoning behind this speech was that he did not want his children to grow up living in a world where there was racial inequality and judgments based on skin color. His speech meant so much and was so touching because it came from the heart. There were parts of the speech that he made up on the spot, which shows how much this movement really meant to him.

  9. The original name of “Normalcy – Never Again,” is very moving and speaks volumes about the struggles to improve society. I am surprised that the part about his dreams was improvised as it is one of the most memorable and iconic speeches to this day.

    1. That is a very fair point. He was a talented speaker which goes to show how far we can go when we carry ourselves through our passions. He did not put a limit on his words, no filter was spoken through which is how people could relate to him and really hear his heart through his voice.

  10. That is utterly fascinating that one of the most iconic lines in history, a line that carved the path to African Americans having equal rights, was not written down and crafted beforehand, but thought up on the spot. The gospel singer calling out for Dr. King to ‘tell them about the dream!’ pushed him to speak a line that headlined the civil rights movement for the rest of its track, is just so cool!

  11. It’s amazing how Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech evolved from its original draft. The fact that the most memorable parts were improvised shows how deeply King felt about the cause and his ability to connect with people. His spontaneous “I Have a Dream” section really highlighted his passion and made the speech even more powerful, reminding us of both our progress and the ongoing fight for equality.

  12. It is mind-blowing that what made this speech so iconic and historical was not originally planned. It is only natural to then think of what would have happened if he had not included the dream part of his speech. Would his speech have been as impactful? Each year in school, I have discussed Martin Luther King Jr and his speech, would there be as much emphasis on him and his speech if the original had been spoken? Would we be as far along regarding equal treatment if the speech differed? Or could we be farther along? It is interesting to delve into the multitude of possible outcomes if this speech was different. The fact that the dream part of his speech was unscripted is also impactful. His ability to create such a beautiful speech without preparation only made his message more powerful and real.

  13. I find it to be very fascinating that such a powerful and memorable speech was not even planned to include such an impactful legacy. I believe that the extra improve makes it clear how passionate he was about the subject and why it affects our nation in such a positive way even today. I find that “I Have a Dream” is a much more impactful title because he is not so much saying to divert from the “normal,” but to instead make equality the normal.

  14. I found it interesting that Martin Luther King Jr’s speech was not originally called “I Have a Dream” nor did it include that section. I typically always think of that section first when I think of his speech. I believe his speech is so compelling because he speaks with passion on the issue. He has a strong conviction to improve racial inequality and he highlighted his desire to see his children grow up in a society where the color of their skin did not affect how they were treated. Overall, his speech was effective in reaching the hearts of the audience and it is so interesting that the speech did not originally include arguably the most compelling part.

Great work here, Meg! I also found it interesting that the title was not originally “I Have a Dream,” because I, too, always think of this section first when this speech comes to mind. Martin Luther King Jr. did an excellent job executing his feelings and devotion to this topic, and I enjoyed hearing your comment regarding this video!

  15. This speech was very inspirational and it was a pivotal time in history. I think we all need to remind ourselves of the past and how far we have come because of efforts of people like MLK.

  16. It is interesting to learn that the original name for the speech was not “I Have a Dream.” I respect his ability and bravery in improvising his speech while presenting it; his ability to take from the energy of his audience and build it to get his message across is what made him such a captivating public speaker. He had an uncanny ability to command his audience’s attention and illustrate his desire for change concerning racial inequality.

  17. It is very interesting and fascinating to me that Martin Luther Kings speech “I Have A Dream”, originally had a different title. This speech was and is one of the most iconic speeches in American history. I believe this speech holds much significance because of the passion and conviction MLK held behind his words. This speech wasn’t just about the content in it, but his heartfelt plea for justice and equality.

  18. This is one of the most historical speeches ever. It was so inspirational and such a great message. People like MLK have done so much for our world and we need to be reminded of efforts like his.

  19. Dr. King was a very important figure in U.S. history. His speech was well written and perfectly delivered to get more and more people behind the movement. He spoke with both passion and fire, and kept the people in power responsible to make change.

  20. I find it extremely fascinating that the impact of Marthin Luther Kings speech continues to change the world today. His speech led to a change in American Society and was a symbol of hope for a equal society.

    1. Yes, Dr. King was a revolutionary, and he is considered one of the most important theologians of the modern world. His vision for the beloved community can and will become a reality when humankind adheres to the great commandment to love God with all our being to
love thy neighbor as one’s self (Matthew 22:36-40).

  21. I never knew the original title of his speech. The impact of the original title is still great, but the fact that the improvised part left the biggest impact shows how influential he was as a person and how impactful leveling with another human can be. It doesn’t surprise me that this was his most influential part of his speech because it was the vocalized sentiments of all the individuals fighting for freedom. They were fighting to create a better future, even if that meant for their children rather than themselves.

    1. Right? They don’t teach what he said in the rest of the speech. I wonder if some other phrase would have had the same impact if he hadn’t improvised the famous line.

    1. I find it really interesting how the change in the speech is not really talked about! I personally did not know that “I Have a Dream” was not really planned all along and was instead created in the heat of the moment.

This is historically one of the greatest and most impactful speeches to ever be given. It continues to shape and change mind to this day and is continued to be taught in classes today. It is truly inspiring.

  23. This is an incredibly well known speech and it is so interesting to learn that there was originally a different track that he was speaking on. You can really tell that his voice was not just for him, but for his kids, the members of that audience, and all those who couldn’t be there. Knowing that such significant parts of this speech were created in the moment show just how passionate he was about this movement.

  24. In my opinion, the book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community” has a powerful message that is an exceptional representation of what Dr. King’s continuous message was all about. In the video, his son states his remarks about the book saying, “We are living in chaos, but we must build community if we as a society are to survive.” Dr. King knew the world was a chaotic and disoriented place, so he strived to not fix it, but build a faithful and unbreakable community within it that would learn to adapt and thrive in the ongoing chaos the world presented daily.
